Summary A Fairy Tale (2006)

A luckless tooth fairy must overcome many unexpected obstacles in order to capture his first tooth.

Ever wonder why Fairies take little children's teeth from underneath their pillows at night? Why to replace their own missing teeth of course. Charlie is a lousy tooth fairy on his last day of his ninety day probation period. He remains toothless. He follows all the rules, but the life of a tooth fairy does not come easy for Charlie. Faced with his last house, and a growing amount of unexpected obstacles Charlie might have to put down the manual, and try something new.

Synopsis A Fairy Tale (2006)

It's after dark and all the tooth fairies are gathered at the milk bar to congratulate Stan (Steven Butchko), Fairy-of-the month. See, fairies gather kids' teeth because they lack their own and Stan now has a full set of choppers and can retire. Enter, Charlie (Chairman Barnes), the unluckiest of the tooth fairies. Charlie's probation is almost up and he hasn't harvested a single tooth. Charlie orders a glass of milk and a cookie, which he stares at longingly. All around him are the sounds of fairies munching and crunching on their cookies. Toothless Charlie, however, must dunk his to soften it up. While Charlie gums on the milk-softened treat Stan can't resist getting in a dig at Charlie's expense. He reminds him if he can't get at least one tooth tonight his probation will expire and he'll be a "dipper" for life. Determined, Charlie gathers up his wand, his tooth fairy handbook and heads out to give it one last try.

Charlie's wings aren't hearty enough to hoist his beefy frame to the second floor. So, a ladder peeks over the sill of the open window to little Jimmy(Jake Haber)'s room. Gingerly, Charlie steps over the ledge and into the moonlit darkness, his size-elevens tiptoeing as quietly as possible. Suddenly, the ground shifts under the ladder and it crashes to the ground outside. Fortunately, it isn't quite enough to rouse young Jimmy who shifts restlessly in his bed. It appears Jimmy may be, horror of horrors, a light sleeper.

Charlie sizes up the logistics and tries to slip his hand carefully under Jimmy's pillow. To his consternation, Charlie finds Jimmy's head in just the wrong location for an undetected retrieval of the tooth. It is obvious that any attempts to shift the boy will wake him. So, consulting his manual, Charlie decides that it might be best to ensure the little nipper won't wake up during the crucial extraction process. Drawing out his wand he dispenses a little "fairy dust". Unfortunately, he hasn't checked the expiration date and his sleep dust elicits nothing but a sneeze.

Turning back to the manual, Charlie paces absently about the room looking for guidance. Too engrossed in his research, he doesn't notice when a wing topples a lamp. The racket is enough to briefly rouse Jimmy who sits bolt upright forcing Charlie to duck beside the bed to hide. With Jimmy's head off the pillow Charlie seizes the moment and quickly moves to get his hand on the tooth. But, just as quickly as he is awoken, the lad falls back asleep, and his head falls back to the pillow like a hammer trapping Charlie's hand.

Charlie has had enough of going by the book so he decides to improvise. Drawing his wand from his belt again he engages it more directly this time, smacking Jimmy square in the forehead. Jimmy, again, rises at the jolt and just as quickly passes out. But, it's just enough time for Charlie to extract his hand and the tooth from under the pillow. He tucks the tooth into its special pocket on his belt and plants a shiny quarter on the kid's head.

With Jimmy once again sleeping soundly it is time for Charlie to make his escape. Since his ladder is gone he must exit through the front door. Ever so quietly he turns the doorknob and creeps into the hallway and turns to pull the door closed behind.

But, wait. Something isn't right. What's that sound? Slowly turning around, Charlie is dismayed at what he finds. It's a low growl coming from the far end of the hall. And, its source is throat of the most ferocious poodle ever bred silhouetted in the moonlight. Knowing he has no chance against such a wild, untamed beast, Charlie fumbles for the knob and returns to the relative safety of Jimmy's room. Relieved at missing the close call Charlie checks on the trophy in his belt only to find it's missing!

Crawling onto his belly, Charlie peers through the crack at the bottom of the door and sees it; the tooth! He tries to reach under but the gap is too narrow to allow his fingers to retrieve it. Before he can formulate a new plan he barely makes out the nose of the blood-thirsty poodle as he laps up the tooth and carries it off.

With no other choices at hand Charlie sets out in pursuit of the beast. He must get that tooth at all costs! Wielding his wand like a baseball bat he emerges once again into the hall. He finds the stairs and heads down to the main floor. Coming from the den at the bottom of the stairs Charlie detects the sounds of static and the faint glow of a television screen. Whatever was on it's now long over. In a wing chair the young boy's grandpa (Lyle Stephen) lies fast asleep, awash in the soft emissions of the old-fashioned CRT.

In the far corner of the room lies the infernal creature. And, beside him, in a pool of slime, is...THE TOOTH! However, in between Charlie and the tooth is a minefield of Jimmy's toys. Being more careful than ever, Charlie navigates the treacherous floor of the den. Finally arriving at his intended destination he dips two fingers into the slimy puddle. Relieved to again be in possession of his treasure Charlie once again moves to exit the premises when his heel lands firmly upon a squeaky toy. At that very moment, Grandpa yawns & shifts in his chair. Startled, the slimed tooth squirts from Charlies fingers and tumbles lazily through the air before landing with a "tik" on the heat register in the floor. In the next instant the tooth has dropped through the grate and sits precariously on the metal louvers inside. Once more, the slots are too narrow for Charlies meaty paws and in struggling to reach the tooth he inadvertently bumps the flue control and the tooth is last seen descending into the glowing, gaping maw of the basement furnace.

Dejected, Charlie turns to the grandpa and spies something out of the corner of his eye. It's a glass full of water with something interesting floating in it.

Cut to the milk bar. Charlie saunters in. This time he's confident and self assured. All eyes are on him as he sidles up the bar and flashes a big, toothy grin. He is sporting the Grandpa's dentures! Victoriously he declares, "Drinks for everyone. Tonight, I retire!"

And, in a final, triumphant gesture, Charlie flips his cookie into the air. We see it as it turns slowly end-over-end and falls helplessly into Charlie's brand new teeth with a giant "crunch".
